The opening of the Angelika Kauffmann exhibition, a display spectacular in scope and quality, heralds a new era for the Vorarlberger Landesmuseum. This jubilee exhibition has been devised by curator Tobias G. Natter, the museum's new director. Due to his international connections, the former curator of the Austrian Gallery Belvedere in Vienna and numerous major exhibitions in Germany, Japan and New York has succeeded in bringing together superlative works of art from all of Europe to Vorarlberg. Marking the 200 th anniversary of her death on 5 November 2007, the display will explore the timeliness of this exceptional artist Angelika Kauffmann. Called "perhaps the most cultivated woman in Europe" by her contemporaries, Angelika Kauffmann's radiance is unbroken till today.
Key works in architecturally appealing rooms
The jubilee exhibition "Angelika Kauffmann. A Woman of Immense Talent” combines chosen works on loan from throughout Europe with the Vorarlberger Landesmuseum’s comprehensive Angelika Kauffmann collection as well as various documents presented for the first time. The generosity of important lenders has made this exhibition of key works from public and private collections from cities such as London, Rome, Florence, Vienna, Munich, Krakow, Weimar, Edinburgh, Chur, Zurich and Vaduz possible. Although a citizen of the world, Angelika Kauffmann, born in the Swiss town of Chur in 1741, has always remained attached to her adopted home town Schwarzenberg; the exhibition provides an opportunity to appraise her artistic development in connection to her remarkable life as a woman in the midst of a world dominated by men both in London and Rome.

An exhibition at two venues
The exhibition "Angelika Kauffmann. A Woman of Immense Talent”, organised by the Vorarlberger Landesmuseum, is on display from 14 June to 5 November 2007 at two venues: in the Vorarlberger Landesmuseum in Bregenz (design: Baumschlager & Eberle, architects) and in the new Angelika Kauffmann Museum in Schwarzenberg (Dietrich I Untertrifaller, architects). The exhibition in Bregenz offers a compendium of Angelika Kauffmann’s life and works; in Schwarzenberg the main emphasis is placed on her relationship to her adopted home. |
